The Discovery

Initially it was thought that the best thing would be for us to find skipper with a yacht that we could crew on. But where to find one….. We posted our requirement on various sailing website and blogs. We enquired at the boating shows and at the Royal Cape Yacht Club with no luck. We thought then we could buy a yacht between us but then we still need to find a skipper and the yacht would have to be sailed back from Rio. We were all not able to do this as we have work commitments. Also it did not make sense for us to own a yacht between us as we all lived in different parts of South Africa and in Jeans case the world. He lives in Spain.

Having thought about this for sometime, it dawned on me that there was one very important fact that we also wanted to achieve from the trip to Rio. We all wanted to gain proper sailing experience, training and certification and we would have to do this by going through a recognised sailing school – so why not see if we could do the Cape to Rio as part of our training and thereby solve all our other problems.
